Uttarkhand has exotic wildlife, bird life and plant life existing in the environs of Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Rajaji National Park is 225 km. from Delhi in Garhwal region (Rishikesh) and Corbett National Park is 300 km from Delhi in Kumaon region. In order to preserve this gift of wildlife, and enable visitors to have a privileged view of the same, the state govt. has created special areas national park and Sanctuaries.
Spread over an area of 820 sq. km established in 1966 on the edge of the Dehradun valley is Rajaji National Park.Three sanctuaries in the Dehradun Shivaliks, Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla were amalgamated into a large protected area and Rajaji National Park in the year 1983. It represents vegetation of several distinct zones & forest types like riverine, broad leaf mixed forests, scrubland and grassy pasturelands. The wildlife here includes as many as 23 species of animals and 315 avifauna species.
Lying between the lower Himalayas and the upper Gangetic plains, it is the northwestern most Habitat of the Asian Elephant. One may watch a herd of elephants roaming majestically in the jungle or even a tiger picking its way through the tall grass or may find oneself excited by wildlife of many kinds including Leopard, Cat, Samihar, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Langoor, Ghoral, Monitor Lizard, Python and even King Cobra and a vast variety of winged delights; Peafowl, Jungle fowl, Kaleej Pheasant, Hornbill, Woodpecker, Thrushes, Kingfisher, Parakeets, Warbler, Barbet, Finch, Indian Roller & the list goes on.
